Valentine Owl

There is this local company here called WhimC. They do a lot of things, but the most popular thing they do is offer these classes where you go and paint.  They had lots of really cute Christmas projects to paint. I almost never have a babysitter so I couldn't go but I was so jealous when all my friends on Facebook were posting pics where they had went to the class. Then when they announced the Valentine project on their Facebook page, I loved it, but again, I didn't have a sitter and I really couldn't justify spending the money. Then they announced that they had some home kits left over. They were a bit cheaper too. So, I decided this was the best option for me. And oh my! I am hooked! It was so fun! I honestly wouldn't want to do it with anyone else or in a class. (I think their last class had 70 people in it!) Because it was so relaxing to just turn on some classic country music and paint and just be alone. I am almost never alone. I LOVED it! With the at home kit, they provide everything you need except the brushes but I found a big variety pack of brushes at Wal-Mart for $5 so it was no big deal.

Here is a pic of the kit. They give you the paint in these little cups, the mounting bracket, some ribbon to hang it from your door, the burlap, twine and letters to make the banner, and step by step instructions with pictures and the actual wooden board that you paint.

First step was to paint the owls head pink, pretending that the bottom was the top of a heart. I had to turn it upside down to accomplish that!
The next step was to paint the sides.
Then to take your brush and make a clean white line around your pink.
Then to take your sponge brush and finish the body of the owl in white. Not painting the toes.
Then to paint the toes orange.
Being sure to paint the sides.
 Looking good already!
The next step was to paint heart shaped wings in red. This part was hard for me.

I am not really happy with how they turned out but I did the best I could.

Then to paint the owls toes with white. (I can't figure out how to rotate the pic)

I had to do several coats on the wings and it never did cover the way I would have liked it to.
The next step was to paint the eye balls white. I used the lid of a coffee can and traced it with a pencil then filled it in with white.

Then to outline the wings in black.

Then to outline the eyes in green. And this is just a side note here but green is my favorite color. I already knew that. But when I started using the green paint, my mood just lifted. I was automatically uplifted. I love green!!!! :)
Then to take the pink paint and make waves across the body of the owl.

Then to take the pink paint and mix it with white paint to make it lighter. I did this in the lid to my coffee can that I used to trace the eyes.
Then to make more waves with the light pink.
 SO stinkin' cute!
Then to take white paint and make squiggles around the face and ears.
The to make the black pupils. I used one of the kids round puzzle pieces and traced it with pencil then filled that in with black for this.

This just shows how BIG this owl is! And the take home owl is smaller than the one you do in class! Can you imagine?! Lol!

The next step was to use your "polka dotter" and make polka dots on the wings in white. Well, I didn't have a "polka dotter" so I used a 2 liter Pepsi bottle! Lol!
 Hey! It worked!

Then to make white polka dots inside the owls pupils. Again, I used the Pepsi bottle.
Then to make partial black outlines around the polka dots.

Then to lighten up your green paint with white and make "ticking" around the owls eyes. I just made dots with the end of my paint brush.

Then to make the beak with orange.

Then to finish painting the sides.

Then to cut pieces of burlap to fit behind these letters.

Then to hot glue the letters onto the burlap.
This is what it looks like from the front.
This is what it looks like from behind.
Then to hot glue the letters onto a piece of twine.

Then to hot glue the banner to the owl.

 And it's finished!!!!

Then we had to attach the hanging bracket and loop the ribbon through it and tie it. And that's it!

They have already started to show some peeks of the Easter projects! I can't wait!!!!
